Why is recycling important?

Recycling conserves energy and reduces the emissions of numerous greenhouse gases and water contaminants. This means that responsible recycling means less air pollution because less solid refuse is produced when recovered material is used. The extraction and refining of virgin materials produce pollution, which can be lessened by recycling and this leads to cleaner air. In addition, breathing in clean air rather than polluted air helps to minimize the risk of all sorts of conditions developing in the years to come.

Additionally, less energy is consumed during production and fewer pollutants are released when products are produced with recycled materials rather than virgin ones which is important in today´s world where fossil fuels are used to generate energy for production. By recycling, one can help protect the nature and environment in terms of reducing the need to consume more of what nature has to offer. This creates an opportunity for the world to heal from the human impact and the way we have destroyed it, leading to a better place to live for everyone. By recycling, we are conserving resources for future generations and setting a good example for them on how to behave towards nature. Also, teaching our children about recycling can stimulate the development of greener technologies.

Recycling by the numbers:

  • If every household in the United States replaced one roll of virgin fiber paper towels with 100% recycled ones - 544,000 trees get saved

  • By recycling one ton of cardboard - 9 cubic yards of landfill space is saved

  • The percentage of paper consumed in the U.S. that was recovered for recycling was 66.2% (2019)
